Puppy dog eyeliner is a Korean beauty trend that gives the eyes a more youthful appearance. It’s a clean take on winged eyeliner, making it easier than ever to achieve.
This makeup technique is ideal for hooded, deep-set, and downturned eyes. It works by outlining the lower lash line, creating a rounded, wide-eye shape.
It’s easy to do
Puppy eyeliner is a fun and easy way to wear winged liners without them looking overdone. It’s also long-lasting, so you won’t have to worry about it smudging.
The trend started on TikTok, where users with hooded eyes have been trying it out – and loving it! Kelso, a user on the platform with over 800k views, shared a step-by-step guide.
It’s a simple technique that makes your eyes look rounded and wide. It’s especially perfect for hooded eyes, which tend to be flat and droopy.
This style of eyeliner doesn’t get lost in the creases and looks perfectly natural, explains Jennifer Villanueva, stylist at Pastels Salon, Dubai. All you need to do is make a line that doesn’t go past the crease and join it with your bottom lash line.
It’s a look that can flatter all eye shapes and looks great with light makeup. You can even use darker eyeliners and shadows to mimic more traditional styles like the cat eye.
It’s long-lasting
Unlike the upward cat eye look, which elongates eyes, puppy dog liner is a downward flick that makes them appear more rounded and youthful. The Korean beauty trend has captured the world’s attention and is a clean way to add some sparkle without committing to a full-on winged eyeliner.
While puppy dog eyeliner might be the trend of the year, it isn’t for everyone. In fact, it can make some eye shapes look unflattering or even worse, droopy and puffy.
But don’t let that put you off – it can be a fun and playful makeup trick, especially for upturned or downturned eye shapes, which are already interesting on their own.
To get the look, you’ll want to prime your lids so that there’s no chance of smudging or creasing. It’s also worth experimenting with different eyeliners to see which one looks best on you.
It’s not for everyone
One of the biggest beauty trends at London Fashion Week is dramatic wing-like eyeliner. But while puppy dog eyeliner may look like a lot of fun, it doesn’t suit everyone or every eye shape.
Originally popularized by K-beauty enthusiasts, the puppy dog eyeliner trend creates an illusion of a rounded or more elongated eye. It’s a great alternative for those who struggle with complicated eyeliner angles or want to try a new look without committing to the commitment of a winged liner.
But while puppy dog eyeliner can elongate almond eyes or deep-set hooded eyes, it doesn’t complement all eye shapes. That’s why it’s a good idea to test out the trend before you jump on board, suggests Manal El Hage, a makeup artist at Dr. Kayle Aesthetic Clinic in Dubai.
To achieve the best results, use a waterproof liquid eyeliner and apply it carefully so that it doesn’t go past the crease of your eye. Then, use a makeup brush or eyeliner brush to fill in the top and bottom lash lines to create a smooth finish.
It’s not for every eye shape
It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the various different eyeliner trends that are all over the internet. While cat eye and winged liner are classics, we’re seeing puppy dog liner popping up everywhere – particularly on TikTok!
Instead of the traditional feline flick, puppy liner curves downwards – like a cute little dog tail. This is a bottom-heavy look where the triangle tail sits in your crease and joins to your bottom lash line, says Jennifer Villanueva, stylist, and makeup artist at Pastels Salon, Dubai.
Those with hooded or deep-set eyes will be especially keen to try out this liquid eyeliner technique as it’s a more natural alternative to the cat eye. Unlike every other wing liner that can interfere with the fold of your eyes and distort it, puppy dog liner keeps your lashes looking straight and smooth.
The best way to start this look is by defining your upper lash line and then gently flicking the liner in a downward direction following the natural shape of your upper lid. Then, fill in your lower lash line with a soft kohl liner, and merge it into your puppy dog line.
